The Healthy Families team at Sport Waitākere is delighted to announce the appointment of Metiria Light to the role of Rautaki Māori. Metiria is of Ngāti Haaua, Ngāti Kahungunu ki Te Wairoa decent, and a proud raukura (alumnus) of te kohanga reo, kura kaupapa Māori and wharekura. Metiria embodies the essence of a raukura – standing confidently in her identity.

As a qualified early childhood and primary school teacher, Metiria has worked in kura kaupapa and kohanga reo, as well as in mainstream educational settings. After her time as a kaiako (teacher), she seamlessly transitioned to a professional learning and development facilitator, where she worked alongside kaiako to enrich learning environments and to create more opportunities to ensure the growth and prosperity of tamariki Māori in educational settings.

Metiria is well versed with the Healthy Families movement, having previously held the Rautaki Māori role in the Murihiku, Waihopai rohe. Her ability to uplift community aspirations in a culturally responsive and meaningful way reflects her dedication to addressing the unique needs of the communities she serves. In this capacity, her commitment to influencing positive change and advancing health outcomes for Māori communities shines through. Healthy Families Waitākere Manager, Mike Tipene shares.

“Metiria is a great addition to our team. We’re truly fortunate to have her relocate to Auckland to share her talents and skills with us and our community. The Healthy Families team is looking forward to the invaluable contributions she will undoubtedly make in this role”.
