This month, Healthy Families Waitākere was thrilled to share the Active Whakapapa kaupapa as part of the 2022 Systems Change in Action Webinar series. Team members Mike Tipene (Ngāpuhi, Te Rarawa) and Giuliana Sewell (Tūhourangi, Ngāti Porou) took the participants through the journey of Active Whakapapa.
A bilingual storytelling experience for the whole whānau, Active Whakapapa shares the history of Mana Whenua whilst walking across the whenua (land). Through Te Reo Māori, waiata and English, a recorded headset shares the whakapapa of the whenua underfoot. Active Whakapapa has been collaboratively designed to enrich hauora (wellbeing) by encouraging physical activity and sharing Te Ao Māori (Māori worldview) of how we understand and interact with our te taiao (environment).
