Tāfesilafa’i: A Celebration of Culture, Community & Legacy

For five years, the Tāfesilafa’i community of care has served as a supportive space for faiaoga (teachers) in aoga amata (Sāmoan language nests) to learn, share experiences, and connect with other aoga amata in way a that embodies fa’a Sāmoa (the Sāmoan way).

On Saturday 03 May, the support network around Tāfesilafa’i gathered to celebrate this journey, reflecting on growth, resilience, and the collective effort that has shaped this initiative. The event was a powerful tribute, featuring heartfelt presentations from key partners and faiaoga, alongside moving cultural performances. Dr. Maria Cooper further elevated the occasion with her inspiring insights on Pasifika leadership.

Another highlight of the event was the premiere of Fa’avavau, a short film honouring the unwavering dedication of the faiaoga in aoga amata. SAASIA, a driving force behind Tāfesilafa’i, echoed the film’s message of collaboration and collective learning.

“Sharing of knowledge is very important to us, that’s our perspective from a Pacific and Samoan [world view]. We learn when we come together; that’s the essence of us, that’s our strength”, says SAASIA Director, Irene Paleai Foroti.

Ella Falakoa, Pacific Strategist, expanded on the film’s deeper meaning. “The name Fa’avavau, meaning ‘forever,’ speaks to the Sāmoan language as a forever language. For it to thrive in Aotearoa, the knowledge must be passed down through the generations, and aoga amata are a vital part of that.”

Another key moment was the unveiling of the Ola Mālosi website, a digital library of Sāmoan-centric resources designed for both faiaoga and tamaiti (children). With its vibrant yet user-friendly interface, the platform ensures easy access to valuable cultural and educational materials. Kayla Schwalger, Creative Director of Tapasā, explains.

“We’re proud to launch Ola Mālosi – a digital library co-designed with faiaoga, for faiaoga. Developed with the Heart Foundation and Talking Matters, this platform empowers teachers to easily find the resources they need.”

More than just a celebration, the event reaffirmed a shared commitment to ensuring the Sāmoan language and culture flourish for generations to come.
